Tooth Extractions
WHAT IS TOOTH EXTRACTIONS?
Extracting a tooth is always a last resort. But when it is necessary, it should be done right.
At LUMI Dental in Boca Raton, extraction is always the last clinical resort. We explore every viable option to save a natural tooth before recommending its removal, because a natural tooth, even a heavily restored one, is almost always preferable to an artificial replacement from a structural and biological standpoint. When extraction is necessary, the procedure is performed with precision, minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue, and a clear plan for tooth replacement so your long term oral health is protected from the moment the tooth is removed.
Most patients who have an extraction performed under modern anesthesia at a skilled practice are genuinely surprised by how comfortable the experience is. The discomfort associated with extraction in most people’s imagination comes from historical experience or secondhand accounts, not from what contemporary dental techniques actually deliver. Post operative recovery is also faster and more manageable than most anticipate, particularly when the aftercare instructions we provide are followed carefully.
BENEFITS OF TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
- Performed under local anesthesia with sedation options available for patients who prefer added comfort.
- Conservative technique minimizes trauma to surrounding bone and tissue, supporting faster healing.
- Tooth replacement options, implants, bridges, or other solutions, discussed at the same appointment.
- Comprehensive written aftercare instructions so recovery is as smooth as possible.
- Follow-up appointment scheduled to confirm healing and advance the tooth replacement plan.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING A TOOTH EXTRACTIONS TREATMENT?
Simple extractions are performed under local anesthesia and typically completed in 20 to 40 minutes. We place gauze at the site to control initial bleeding and provide detailed written post operative instructions covering diet, activity, oral hygiene near the site, and signs that should prompt a call to our office. Most patients manage recovery well with over the counter or prescribed pain relief and a soft diet for several days. We schedule a follow up to confirm healing and to move forward with tooth replacement planning.
OUR APPROACH TO TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
At LUMI Dental, the extraction decision is always preceded by a thorough evaluation of whether the tooth can be saved. We review the extent of decay, structural integrity, bone and tissue health, and the long-term prognosis before recommending removal. When extraction is the appropriate recommendation, we explain the clinical reasoning clearly and discuss how we will protect the socket and surrounding bone, including whether a bone graft at the time of extraction makes sense for your future replacement plan.

Your smile deserves attention today, not tomorrow.

Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is generally well tolerated. Pressure and movement are felt but sharp pain should not be. Post operative discomfort is normal and manageable with appropriate pain relief.
How long is recovery after an extraction?
Soft tissue healing takes approximately one to two weeks. Full bone healing of the socket takes several months but does not typically cause discomfort during this period.
Should I replace an extracted tooth?
In almost all cases, yes. Missing teeth allow adjacent teeth to shift and the opposing tooth to over erupt, disrupting the bite and creating secondary problems. We discuss implants, bridges, and other replacement options at or before the time of extraction.
What is a dry socket and how do I avoid it?
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot in the extraction socket is dislodged prematurely. Avoid smoking, using straws, or spitting forcefully in the first 72 hours. If a dry socket develops, we treat it promptly at a brief follow-up.
Can I drive home after my extraction?
If you received only local anesthesia, yes. If you opted for sedation, you will need someone to drive and accompany you home. Please arrange this in advance for sedated procedures.
