Surgical Extractions
WHAT IS SURGICAL EXTRACTIONS?
Some extractions are more complex, but complex does not have to mean difficult when you are in the right hands.
Not every tooth that requires removal can be extracted with a straightforward simple technique. Teeth that are impacted, fractured at the gum line, have curved or fused roots, or are associated with pathology such as a cyst require a surgical approach to remove safely and completely. At LUMI Dental in Boca Raton, surgical extractions are performed with the same careful pre-surgical planning, precise technique, and thorough post operative guidance that defines our standard of care across all procedures, because how an extraction is performed has a direct impact on healing and on the options available afterward.
A surgical extraction involves making a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth and root, carefully removing any bone necessary to allow safe elevation, and in some cases sectioning the tooth into pieces to minimize the force required for removal. The site is then inspected, cleaned, and closed with sutures. The precision of this approach results in a more controlled procedure, less trauma to surrounding structures, and better conditions for healing than attempting a simple technique on a tooth that genuinely requires surgery.
BENEFITS OF SURGICAL EXTRACTIONS
- Appropriate surgical technique from the outset produces a safer, less traumatic, and better-healing result.
- Incision and suture closure supports primary healing, faster and more predictable than an open wound.
- Pre-surgical imaging maps root anatomy and proximity to critical structures before the procedure.
- Sedation available for patients who prefer a more relaxed surgical experience.
- Preserves surrounding bone and tissue in the best possible condition for future replacement procedures.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING A SURGICAL EXTRACTIONS TREATMENT?
Surgical extraction is performed under local anesthesia with sedation available. Recovery is somewhat more involved than a simple extraction, some additional soreness and swelling for a few days is expected, reflecting the greater extent of the procedure. We provide comprehensive written post operative instructions and appropriate pain management guidance before you leave the office. Sutures are either self dissolving or removed at a brief follow-up appointment seven to ten days after surgery. A more comprehensive healing check is scheduled at two to four weeks.
OUR APPROACH TO SURGICAL EXTRACTIONS
At LUMI Dental, every surgical extraction begins with a pre surgical evaluation that includes appropriate imaging. For complex root anatomies or teeth in proximity to critical structures, cone beam CT imaging is recommended before the procedure. We review the imaging and plan with you before the procedure date so there are no surprises on the day of surgery. We also discuss tooth replacement planning at the same consultation, because the path forward after an extraction is as important as the extraction itself.

Your smile deserves attention today, not tomorrow.

VIEW ALL TESTIMONIALFrequently Asked Questions LUMI Dental
How is a surgical extraction different from a simple extraction?
A simple extraction removes a tooth visible above the gum line with no incision. A surgical extraction requires an incision in the gum tissue and sometimes removal of bone to access a tooth that cannot be reached with a simple technique.
Does a surgical extraction hurt more than a simple one?
The procedure is performed under anesthesia and should not be more painful during the procedure itself. Post operative soreness may be somewhat more pronounced and may last a few days longer. Appropriate pain management makes recovery manageable for most patients.
How long will sutures stay in?
Resorbable sutures dissolve within seven to fourteen days. Non resorbable sutures are removed at a brief follow up appointment typically scheduled seven to ten days after surgery.
Can I eat normally after a surgical extraction?
A soft diet is recommended for several days following the procedure. We provide specific dietary guidance in your post operative instructions and advise on when a normal diet can be gradually reintroduced.
What happens to the space left after a surgical extraction?
Tooth replacement planning, implants, a bridge, or a partial denture, is discussed at your surgical consultation. We prefer to have this conversation before the extraction so you have a clear path forward from the outset.
