Tooth-Colored Fillings
WHAT IS TOOTH-COLORED FILLINGS?
Treating a cavity should protect your tooth, not leave a permanent silver mark across your smile.
Tooth-colored composite fillings restore cavities and minor tooth damage using a shade matched resin material that bonds directly to the existing tooth structure and is virtually invisible in the mouth. At LUMI Dental in Boca Raton, we use high quality composite resin that is both aesthetically excellent and clinically sound, requiring less removal of healthy enamel than traditional amalgam and providing a restoration that is free of mercury and completely natural in appearance.
Composite resin bonds chemically to the tooth through an adhesive system that provides structural support while allowing a more conservative preparation. We shade-match the composite carefully, sometimes layering multiple shades to replicate the natural color gradation of the enamel, and verify the bite after every filling to ensure the new restoration meets the opposing teeth correctly. At LUMI Dental, a filling is treated with the same clinical precision as any other restorative procedure, because the quality of every restoration contributes to the overall health of the arch.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING A TOOTH-COLORED FILLINGS TREATMENT?
Most tooth-colored fillings are completed in a single appointment under local anesthesia, typically taking 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size and location of the cavity. The filling material is fully cured at the time of your appointment. You can eat and drink normally once the anesthesia has worn off, though we recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours. Some sensitivity to temperature following a filling is normal and typically resolves within one to two weeks.
OUR APPROACH TO TOOTH-COLORED FILLINGS
At LUMI Dental, filling placement begins with a precise diagnosis confirmed by clinical examination and digital X-rays. We remove only what is decayed and no more healthy tooth structure than necessary. We select composite shades carefully, apply the material in controlled increments, shape each layer before curing, and verify the bite with meticulous attention before considering the appointment complete. A filling placed with this level of care lasts significantly longer and performs significantly better than one done quickly.

Your smile deserves attention today, not tomorrow.

VIEW ALL TESTIMONIALFrequently Asked Questions LUMI Dental
How long do composite fillings last?
Modern composite fillings typically last seven to ten years or longer. Larger fillings and those in high stress areas may require replacement sooner than smaller anterior fillings.
Can old silver fillings be replaced with composite?
In many cases, yes. We evaluate each existing amalgam filling individually to determine whether replacement is clinically indicated. We do not recommend replacement for fillings that are performing well simply for cosmetic reasons.
Why might a large cavity need a crown instead of a filling?
When decay removes a significant portion of tooth structure, a filling cannot provide adequate structural support. In these situations, a crown provides full coverage protection that prevents fracture under chewing forces.
Will my new filling be sensitive?
Some sensitivity to cold following a filling, especially in deeper cavities, is normal and typically resolves within two weeks. Pain that worsens over time or that is severe warrants a call to our office.
Can I eat immediately after a filling?
Wait until the anesthesia has worn off to avoid accidentally biting your cheek or lip. The composite is fully cured at your appointment, so there is no waiting period beyond the anesthesia.
