Inlays & Onlays

WHAT IS INLAYS & ONLAYS?

Between a filling and a crown, there is a restoration that is often the perfect answer.

Inlays and onlays are laboratory-fabricated restorations that fill the clinical space between a large filling and a full crown, offering a level of durability, fit accuracy, and conservation of healthy tooth structure that exceeds what a direct composite filling can provide, without the full coverage and preparation extent of a crown. At LUMI Dental in Boca Raton, inlays and onlays are recommended when the clinical situation specifically calls for them, as the most appropriate restorative solution for that degree of damage.

An inlay fits within the cusp tips of a posterior tooth, essentially a precision fitted indirect filling. An onlay extends to cover one or more of the outer cusps, providing greater protection to a weakened cusp structure without requiring the full preparation of a crown. Both are fabricated from ceramic or zirconia materials in a dental laboratory from precise digital impressions, producing a fit significantly more accurate than a direct restoration and a marginal seal that reduces the risk of secondary decay beneath the restoration.

BENEFITS OF INLAYS & ONLAYS

  • More durable and better-fitting than a large direct composite filling in the same clinical situation.
  • More conservative than a full crown, only the damaged portion is removed, preserving healthy structure.
  • Laboratory fabrication achieves a level of surface hardness and marginal precision difficult to replicate chairside.
  • Ceramic and zirconia materials are stain-resistant and visually natural.
  • Typically lasts 15 years or longer with proper care, significantly longer than large direct restorations.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING A INLAYS & ONLAYS TREATMENT?

Inlay and onlay treatment involves two appointments. The first covers preparation of the tooth, digital impressions, and placement of a temporary filling. The second appointment, approximately two weeks later, involves delivery, fitting, and permanent cementation. Both appointments are performed under local anesthesia. Sensitivity in the treated tooth during the interim is normal. After the final restoration is placed, the tooth should feel comfortable and function normally within a brief adjustment period.

OUR APPROACH TO INLAYS & ONLAYS

At LUMI Dental, the recommendation for an inlay, an onlay, a filling, or a crown is made based on thorough clinical evaluation and clear clinical rationale. We do not default to the most expensive option without justification, and we do not place a large direct filling in a situation where the structural demands of the tooth clearly call for something more robust. The goal is always the most appropriate restoration for the specific clinical situation, and the most conservative approach that achieves that goal.

Your smile deserves attention today, not tomorrow.
